"Hey, look at those markers. What did they say?" "I don't know. I was too busy driving to look at it. Couldn't you read it?" "No. We went by them too fast. I wish there was some place I could read what's on all these markers. There's just no way to stop and enjoy them!" Sound familiar? That's what we used to say too. The only difference is that we are trying to do something about it. It was just this sort of situation that gave us the idea to create and start highwaymarker.org. Our country is rich in history. The various state historical highway marker programs make it possible to not only learn a little about that history but to see where it took place. You may live or travel only a short distance where a historically significant event took place and, with the help of the marker programs, you can know it and learn about it... at 55 mph. We decided to try and put together a collection of as many of these markers of history in one place. Not only that, but to make it easily searchable. That way you can be "Driving History Home" in the safety and comfort of your home. Learn a little about our history and find out where it took place to take a trip into our past. Our main goal with highwaymarker.org is to include information about as many markers as possible from throughout the country. We are also visiting as many of the markers as we can to provide a current photo and updated information. We include such information as the condition of the marker, if the marker has been moved, and even whether or not it's actually still there. We feel that the markers are educational and fun and, as our mission statement says, we hope "[t]o increase awareness of Americas past through easier access to its historical highway markers." If you enjoy visiting and reading about these bits of history, we hope you will enjoy our site. If you have any questions or comments or just want to pass on an intersting marker tidbit, please feel free to Contact Us. Thank you and enjoy! |
